BODØ BIENNALE'S COMMISSION | AER | MALIN BÜLOW

Thursday 1 - Sunday 4 September

various times

AER is a new, extensive commission for Bodø Biennale by textile artist Malin Bülow. The artist works choreographically with bodies and cast figures encapsulated in massive, elastic textiles. These are fastened to existing structures and machines in Bodø city. The work is installed and strung up in various horizontal and vertical stretches, in different outdoor sites in the city.

"Aer" is Greek for wind. The work responds to Bodø's natural location by the sea, with the Bodø wind, the wide horizon and the surrounding mountain peaks. The location has made the city a logistics hub in constant motion. New buildings are rising and flows of people, materials and machines are continuously arriving and departing.

The elasticity of the textile forms the basis for constant movements and shapeshifting due to various forces - of contemporary dancers, machines and natural phenomena. Power, tension and resistance are present, both in a metaphorical and physical sense. Body parts and muscle mass of the contemporary dancers and cast figures become visible in the textile membranes - giving association to skin and abstract, genderless formations. They may resemble a cocoon under the thin, transparent textile membrane. The continuous changes of form within the textile suggest a resistance from inner forces, an initiative for liberation. It is like a transitional state, in the same way that the cocoon is a stage of rest before complete transformation.
